Background of the study
Hashtagbased language change is a striking feature of Nigerian online communication, especially on Twitter where political and social movements are prominent. Hashtags serve not only as topical markers but also as agents of language innovation, spurring the creation of new expressions and modifying existing linguistic forms (Akinyele, 2023). This study examines how hashtag movements on Twitter influence language change by encapsulating evolving cultural narratives and socio-political sentiments. Users frequently repurpose hashtags to express collective identity, drive political agendas, and reshape meanings in real time (Ibrahim, 2024). The dynamic interplay between digital activism and linguistic creativity is particularly pronounced in Nigeria, where diverse cultural and political contexts converge online. By analyzing hashtagbased communication, this research seeks to document the processes underlying language change, explore the evolution of digital lexicons, and assess the broader implications for contemporary language practices (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing prominence of hashtag movements in driving language change, there is a lack of systematic research on how these phenomena affect Nigerian online communication. Existing studies often overlook the role of hashtags as catalysts for linguistic transformation, focusing instead on their use as mere topical indicators (Chukwu, 2024). This gap limits our understanding of the mechanisms through which hashtags influence language innovation. The study aims to fill this gap by examining the linguistic changes associated with hashtag movements on Twitter, providing a comprehensive analysis of their impact on digital language practices (Akinyele, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To investigate the role of hashtags in driving language change on Twitter.
  2. To analyze the linguistic features associated with hashtagbased communication.
  3. To assess the broader implications of hashtag movements on digital language evolution.

Research questions

  1. How do hashtag movements influence language change in Nigerian Twitter discourse?
  2. What linguistic features are associated with hashtagbased language innovation?
  3. What impact do hashtag movements have on overall digital communication trends?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the transformative role of hashtag movements in shaping Nigerian online language. The insights will benefit linguists, digital media analysts, and sociocultural researchers by providing a clearer picture of language change in the digital age (Akinyele, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses on hashtagbased language change in Nigerian Twitter movements. It is limited to the analysis of online language practices on Twitter and does not extend to other social media platforms.

  • HashtagBased Language Change: The evolution of language driven by the use of hashtags.
  • Twitter Movement: A coordinated online effort, typically driven by social or political causes, that uses hashtags.
